What Is a GPA?
A student’s progress in a course is represented by their Grade Point Average (or GPA) , which the student gets from each of the courses. This representation of this grade is usually done by adding each score of each course and getting their average. GPA is the metric used to evaluate the performance of a student.
Understanding Grade Points and Letter Grades
GPA can be evaluated as letter grade and also as grade points. A letter grade is an illustration of the student’s achievement, which is usually in the form of a letter. On the other hand, each letter grade is associated with a number grade, usually on a scale of 4.0 is the grade point.
Letter Grades:
The standard system of letter grades is with the letters A to F . Also they are evaluated with the operators of (+) and (-). All the letter have their meaning, A is excellent, B is good, C is average, D is below average and F is failing.
Standard Grades: A, B, C, D, F
With Operators: A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-
Grade Points :
As we told before each letter grade is assigned a numerical value with a 4.0 scale. Letter A has 4.0, B has 3.0 and up to F note is subtracted 1.0 grade. Another more precise system is the 4.3 scale which is related to letter grading with operators of (+) and (-). In this scale letter, A+ has 4.3 grade points, A has 4.0, A- has 3.7, and so on. For each grade going down from A+ to D subtract a 0.3 grade, apart from F that is equal to 0. Below you have a table that joins both the system of standard grade and with operators.
Conversion of Letter Grade to Grade Point and Vice Versa:
Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA
Weighted and unweighted GPA, both have a different way of evaluating the subject difficulty. Subjects that are advanced such as AP or IB are given greater point values by including 4.0 scale or higher (GPA of 5.0) for Weighted GPA. On the other hand, unweighted GPA also have 4.0 scale but the difference is that all the subjects are treated with the same level despite the difficulty they have.

How to calculate GPA manually?
In this example, we are going to take 3 subjects (courses) followed by their grades and credits.
- Math (3 credits): A (4.0)
- Science (4 credits): B+ (3.3)
- Biology (3 credits): C+ (2.3)
Step-by-Step Calculation of GPA :
- English: 4.0 * 3 = 12.0
- Math: 3.3 * 4 = 13.2
- History: 2.7 * 3 = 8.1
- Total Points: 12.0 + 12.0 + 6.0 = 33.3
- Total Credits: 3 + 4 + 3 = 10
- GPA: 30.0 / 10 = 3.33
